It was a beautiful, sunny day at Balboa Park on July 17, 2021. Members of the San Diego BMW CCA chapter gathered for another Cars and Coffee event. Over 40 vehicles were in attendance. We oohed and aahed over beautiful engines, restored OG models, and modified newbies. However for me, the best part of the morning was meeting friends old and new. I loved hearing the stories of what brought each of them together at this event. A first time club member excited to share his new ride, a young man following in his uncle’s tracks, a father sharing his love of BMWs with his son, couples sharing a passion for cars, old club friends meeting to catch up, and families enjoying a walk amongst the cars with their young kids or puppies. Great conversations were had all around.

The “usual” stopped there. More than 30 club members decided to take advantage of an exclusive docent-led tour of the newly renovated San Diego Automotive Museum. Thanks to the fantastic events coordinator, Frankie Patino, we were able to get an in-depth tour of the new exhibits. We got to experience the beginning of the museum’s new display philosophy. Rather than committing the museum to a four-month themed exhibit, they have redesigned the museum to allow for more vehicles to be cycled in and out each month. The knowledgeable docents shared fascinating information on the history of each car (and motorcycle), the owners, unique features, and much more. Our savvy members were able to add their vast expertise to the conversation as well. We’ll have to return next time to get a better look at the extensive library collection which is also due to be remodeled. Be sure you make it a point to visit this beautiful building and all of its breathtaking contents again and again.

See you at our next chapter event!!
